The PE Department is located in separate buildings, a short walk from the main block. The department enjoys some excellent facilities, including: an all-weather pitch, squash courts, a gymnasium, indoor climbing facilities, a sports hall and extensive playing fields. At examination level, theory lessons are taught in the main building, in rooms which benefit from an interactive white board.
Mr Thompson has been Head of PE for the past two decades and PE is also taught by Miss Winstanley, who is Second in Department, Mr Said, our School Sports Co-ordinator who works in Hebburn Comprehensive and with our family of feeder primary schools and by Mrs Watson, who is also a Head of Learning. Mr Williams continues to teach PE at examination level. Two new appointees will join the department in September 2008: Mr Harris and Miss Storey.
In Key Stage 3, all pupils follow a Scheme of Work linked to the National Curriculum. Pupils are generally taught in single-gender groups, within each of the ability bands, and have 4 hours of PE per fortnightly timetable cycle. At Key Stage 4, all pupils currently follow core PE for 3 hours per fortnightly cycle, although in Year 10 from September 2008, this will increase to 4 hours per fortnight. The department offers a range of options, on a rotational basis, from which pupils select their preferred sporting activities.
At examination level, PE is a popular and extremely successful option at GCSE; from September 2008, the department will be adding BTEC Sport to the curriculum offer for those pupils who opt to study PE beyond the core allocation, and this route will secure the potential of two GCSE passes. The department also coaches pupils towards the Junior Sports Leader Award.
School has a strong tradition in successfully competing in inter-school sport, both within the Borough of South Tyneside and beyond. Both boys and girls have secured ongoing successes in cross country and athletics, whilst many honours have been won in football and netball. The department offers a wide and interesting range of extra-curricular activities, according to season.
