Art and Photography are taught in a suite of rooms on the ground floor of the main building, and enjoy high-quality facilities. There are three main Art rooms and, for Photography, a dark room, lighting studio and computer suite.
Miss Siddiqui is Head of Art, whilst Miss Turner is in charge of Photography. Miss Hackett and Miss Parry both teach mainly Art, but also some Photography.
Both subjects are popular options in Key Stage 4, and the department does much to encourage young people to visit art galleries and exhibitions, including organising visits and inviting artists-in-residence to work with pupils.
Traditional skills in drawing and painting are taught in Key Stage 3, as well as 3-dimensional work, and the history of Art informs a whole range of projects which pupils enjoy.
At Key Stage 4, whether pupils decide to follow Art, Photography or both, the coursework element is demanding. For each subject, three pieces of coursework are needed, together with sketch book support, and these count for 60% of the final grade. A themed examination, taken over two days and prepared for in advance, constitutes the remaining 40% of the marks.
Pupils at both key stages are encouraged to attend the clubs and support the department runs after school, whilst sessions offered during holiday periods provide invaluable support for GCSE.
